Frankfort, Ky. (WTVQ)– Former Gov. Julian Carroll laid in state at the capitol on Friday.
He laid in state from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In between those times, the capitol held a memorial service from 12:30 to 1:30.
“Thank you all so much for being here today,” said Kenneth Carroll, son of Julian. “For being a friend and supporter of dad’s and our family for many many years. He loved you all.”
Many people made it out to pay their respects on Friday and spoke highly of his time in office.
“He was a good governor, excellent administrator, did a lot of good things for the commonwealth of Kentucky,” said with Brett Scott who worked with Carroll. “Couldn’t tell you a person more committed to the Commonwealth than Gov. Carroll.”
Carroll passed early Sunday morning at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center. He was 92 years old.
During his lifetime, Carroll served five terms in the State House of Representatives and was elected Lieutenant Governor, eventually succeeding Governor Wendell Ford in 1974.
Carroll was elected governor, by a record margin of victory, in 1975 serving until 1979.
Current Gov. Andy Beshear spoke during the memorial service about what Carroll did for the commonwealth.
“To his family, your dad, granddad and great grand-dad leaves behind a legacy of long and abiding service to the commonwealth’s people,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “And that is indeed something to be remembered for and to be celebrated. ”
Carroll’s funeral service will be held on Saturday in Frankfort.
