Teen with type 1 diabetes wins scholarship

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – An 18-year-old from Lawrenceburg knows exactly what it’s like to suffer from type one diabetes.

After two years of feeling sick, visiting doctors and getting tests, Anna williams and her family finally got some answers.

“Last year on Presidents Day of 2020, I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes,” Anna Williams said.

Since then, Anna and her family have faced many ups and downs but this disease hasn’t stopped her.

“It’s just a disease. It’s not taking control of your life, it’s just a part of your life,” Anna Williams said.

While learning how to adapt, Anna continued school with a 4.0 gpa, played varsity soccer and managed to secure two full ride scholarships to the University of Louisville.

And if you think that’s impressive, she’s been working to become an advocate for chronic illness, which also landed her another five thousand dollar scholarship from an organization called “Beyond Type One.”

“I applied for that and it was really in depth with how you personally were affected with your type one and what you want to do in the world with it,” Anna Williams said.

She says she wants to raise awareness.

Parents, Frederick and Stephanie Williams say they’re incredibly proud of Anna’s accomplishments, despite the challenges.

“I prayed a lot. I mean I went to my closet when she was in the hospital, every night she was in the hospital and I just cried and prayed,” Stephanie Williams said.

They say it’s a fight but the only option is to move forward.

“She’s a self motivated person and so again, there’s a dissapointment, there’s a shock and you deal with all those things but once you overcome those, she started moving forward and she never stopped,” Frederick Williams said.

Anna’s in good health now but she knows it’ll be a lifelong battle.

She wants to educate people on the different between type 1 and type 2. She says type 1 is genetic, it’s inevitable, it flares up due to viruses, and people can’t live without insulin. She says type 2 is from exercise and eating habits.
