Teacher of the Week: Larissa Johnson, Wrigley Elementary School

Morgan Co., Ky. (WTVQ)– A lot of people say they love their job, but when Larissa Johnson says it, you can just tell she means it.

“Well I always say, if you find something you love, then you don’t ever work. And that’s the way I fee. That’s what I want to do. It gets tough, don’t get me wrong, but my heart is in it for the kids.” said Johnson.

She’s been a teacher for eight years. Currently she is a reading and language arts teacher for fourth and fifth graders at Wrigley Elementary in Morgan County, obviously her role is to teach, but she says there’s a lot more to it than that.

“I want to be that person. I want them to look back and be like, “you know what? Ms. Johnson cared for me. She helped me, she wanted me to learn, she pushed me.” And that’s the reason I’m here for that. Regardless of how stressful it can be, nothing can take place of those kids. And that’s, to me, what education is all about.” said Johnson.

For many of us, there was an aha moment when learning to read. That’s something Johnson says she loves seeing in her students, knowing she had that impact.

“To see their eyes light up, and they’re all excited, and they want to say, “oh, can I read it again?” There’s nothing more precious than that. So even in the older grades though, you’ll have kids that they find something they love to read about. So once they find that go-to, for most of the boys is that science fiction and they get into it. It makes my heart smile because I’m like, “yes, they want to read,” and it makes me all excited.” said Johnson
