Teacher of the Week: Keia Scott-Newsome, Paul Laurence Dunbar High school
Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ)– Kia Scott-Newsome was on the path to be a doctor.
“I think I just wanted to be a game-changer.” said Scott-Newsome.
When her father, who was a teacher, passed away, she realized something.
“When he passed away, 744 people showed up to his visitation. And I was like, “wow. I could change the world by just being a teacher.” And so from there, I really pursued it after that.” said Scott-Newsome.
Following in her dad’s footsteps, Scott-Newsome is now in her fifth year of teaching science at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, and she is a game-changer, helping change the future through her students.
“It’s like you’re cultivating the future. These kids are going to lead my kids one day, and to know that I had a hand in that, it just blows my mind. It’s amazing to me.” said Scott-Newsome.
Scott-Newsome says at the end of the day, it’s not always about learning science.
“To me, we may not learn about science today, but we may just have a sit-down and have a life lesson.” said Scott-Newsome.
