Taylor sentenced to 49 years in Alex Johnson murder

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Just over a month after a jury convicted Mark Taylor of murdering UK chef Alex Johnson, a judge handed Taylor a sentence of 49 years Friday morning.

Taylor’s sentence includes 22 years for murder, 22 years for kidnapping, and five years tampering with physical evidence.

In June, a jury convicted Taylor of beating Alex Johnson to death back in December 2013 over his marijuana selling business.

Johnson’s body was later found in a barrel in the Kentucky river, according to police.

Family members of Alex Johnson were present during the sentencing.

Alex’s father, Lee Johnson, talked for the first time since the trial began.

He’s said he and the family are trying to close this horrific chapter in their lives.

He says he didn’t feel like justice was served and that he would like to see a change in Kentucky law.

Mark Taylor is eligible for parole in 20 years.

Taylor’s attorney’ say they are planning to appeal, they say it could take up to two years to reach the Supreme Court.
