A helicopter circled overhead shining a light on the side of the road.  We heard police yell to the suspect, "Come out of the bushes."

KSP says the suspect got out of his car with a gun and fired.  KSP says Troopers, Lexington Police Officers, and Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies were on the scene at this point, and they returned fire.  KSP would not say how many shots were fired.  Witnesses described hearing about 15-20 shots.  KSP says the suspect was taken to UK Hospital where he later died.  The Coroner has not yet released his name.

This all happened as EKU’s football game against Morehead State was ending.  EKU emailed a public safety alert for people on campus to shelter in place and asking others to stay away.

EKU had fireworks after the football game.  People nearby said they thought they were hearing fireworks, but soon realized they were hearing gun shots.

State Police expected to be on the scene in Richmond for several hours more. Lexington Police say Officer Winter is being treated at UK for non-life threatening injuries.
