Suspect in Cynthiana shootings captured by police
HARRISON COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- The capture of a man, accused of shooting at a helicopter and law enforcement officials in Harrison County yesterday.
The shootings caused nearby schools to go on lock-down for hours yesterday and even cancel classes today.
The Harrison County Sheriff says Thomas Field Vanmeter was finally arrested near this property in rural Harrison County Tuesday morning after evading police Monday after shooting at a helicopter and sheriff’s deputies.
The sheriff says Vanmeter was arrested just after 9 a.m. near highway 1842 West in Cynthiana.
Police say Vanmeter shot at a Kentucky Utilities helicopter and then at sheriff’s deputies responding to a well fair check of him Monday afternoon, causing nearby schools to go on lock down for hours.
After being unable to find Vanmeter Monday night, the sheriff says they got a call this morning from someone saying they spotted him on a dirt bike in the area.
The sheriff says Vanmeter had two guns on him at the time of his arrest but thankfully he followed deputies orders and no one was hurt.
“Obviously we feel confident that this is the guy that shot many rounds at deputies yesterday, my deputies in particular. So very serious, critical incident, really couldn’t have ended any better than it did this morining,” said Harrison County Sheriff Shain Stephens.
The sheriff says Vanmeter will be taken to Bourbon County Detention Center for holding and could face charges as serious as attempted murder.
