Supporters want new FCPS school named after fallen firefighter

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- What started as a Facebook group, evolved into an online petition with the goal of having a Lexington high school named after fallen firefighter, Brenda Cowan.

Cowan was shot to death, responding to a shooting victim on February 13th, 2004. Today, there’s still a memorial to Cowan outside of fire station 18 in Lexington.

Monday morning, many people woke up to a Facebook group invite from Brad Morris, a retired Lexington firefighter. The group, called “Brenda Cowan High School” suggests Fayette County Public Schools’ newest high school be named to honor Cowan. Morris was surprised at the page’s reach.

“Where did you go to high school? And they can say, Brenda Cowan High School. Then, her legacy has passed way beyond my generation,” says Morris. That’s how he envisions future generations, including his children.
