Sunshine sticks around with summerlike warmth
Warm, dry days continue before rain chances return late this weekend.
A Warm September Morning
Thursday morning started off mild, with lows in the mid to upper 50s and some areas waking up in the low 60s. Skies stayed mostly clear overnight, and that sunshine will carry us through the day. This afternoon, highs climb into the upper 80s with a few spots possibly hitting the low 90s. Tonight, we’ll cool back into the upper 50s under clear skies, keeping things pleasant for the evening.
Holding Onto the Heat
High pressure remains in control across the Ohio Valley, keeping our weather locked into a warm and dry pattern. Through Friday and into Saturday, highs will continue to reach the upper 80s and low 90s—about 10 degrees above average for this point in September. Overnight lows, however, will feel more seasonal, dipping into the upper 50s and low 60s.
Afternoons will be very dry, with humidity levels dropping into the 20–30% range during peak heating hours. Winds will stay light, generally under 10 mph, so while conditions won’t be breezy, the dryness will be noticeable.
Rain Chances Arrive Late Weekend
We’ve been eyeing rain chances for several days, and the timing has shifted a bit. Instead of Saturday, it now looks like the best chance for showers will arrive late Sunday and continue into early next week—just in time for the start of fall.
While showers and a few storms are possible, rainfall totals don’t look especially heavy. Some areas northwest of the Bluegrass could see up to a half inch or more, but much of central Kentucky will likely see lighter amounts.
Dryness and Drought Concerns Continue
Despite rain returning to the forecast, it’s not expected to make a big dent in our ongoing drought. Central Kentucky remains under abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions, and many counties still have burn bans in place. Without a soaking rainfall, dry vegetation and warm afternoons will keep fire concerns elevated.
