Sunshine and warmth hold on as weekend nears
Warm sunshine continues into the weekend before rain chances make a return late Sunday.
A Comfortable Start to Friday
Friday morning started off mild and pleasant, with overnight lows in the mid to upper 50s and some spots dipping into the low 60s. Skies stayed mostly clear, and that sunshine will carry us through the day once again. This afternoon, temperatures will climb into the upper 80s, with a few locations likely reaching into the low 90s.
Friday night brings great weather for high school football across the area. At kickoff, temperatures will sit in the low 80s, dropping into the low 70s by the time fans head home. Skies remain clear, and overnight lows will fall back into the upper 50s.
Holding Onto the Heat Into the Weekend
High pressure is still the main weather player, keeping skies mostly sunny and conditions dry as we head into Saturday. Temperatures will stay unseasonably warm, topping out in the upper 80s and low 90s—about 10 degrees above average for mid-September.
While winds stay light, humidity will be very low during the afternoons, with relative humidity levels dipping near 25–30%. That combination of warmth and dryness will keep an elevated fire weather threat in place through Saturday.
Rain Chances Finally Return
After a long stretch of dry days, rain chances are finally set to return. The best opportunity for showers arrives late Sunday and continues into early next week, with Tuesday and Wednesday looking like the most active days.
Rainfall amounts aren’t expected to be especially heavy, but some areas—especially across southern Indiana and northern Kentucky—could pick up around an inch or more. Other parts of the region may see less, closer to a half inch. Still, any rainfall will be welcomed as dry conditions linger.
Drought Concerns Stick Around
Even with rain in the forecast, it’s unlikely to provide major relief from ongoing dry-to-moderate drought conditions across central Kentucky. Until we see a widespread soaking rain, vegetation will stay dry, and fire concerns will continue on warm afternoons.
