Students at Lexington school get ‘Shoes That Fit’

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Every student at William Wells Brown Elementary in Lexington is sporting a brand-new pair of sneakers.

Fayette County Public Schools says area donors and a California-based nonprofit called “Shoes That Fit” gave away more than 400 pairs of shoes to the students on Friday.

Among the volunteers handing out the shoes were former University of Kentucky athletes Jack “Goose” Givens and Jacob Tamme.

“I grew up with hand-me-downs so I know what it’s like not to be able to afford a new pair of shoes,” said Givens, whose family lived in the William Wells Brown neighborhood. “It means something to me to come back and help out.”

“Shoes That Fit” says having new, proper-fitting shoes can increase a child’s self-esteem and physical activity levels as well as improve behavior and school attendance.
