Still no suspect in shooting death of pregnant woman, unborn child

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Police are investigating a double homicide after a shooting that killed a pregnant woman and her unborn baby.

Police say the shooting happened at the Matador North Apartments on Winburn Drive late Wednesday night.

Maryiah Coleman, 22 and eight months pregnant, was shot once in the upper body, according to investigators. The coroner says she died at UK Hospital and that doctors did everything they could but couldn’t save her baby.

Detectives are still trying to figure out what led to the shooting. Initially investigators were told Coleman was out walking her dog and may have gotten caught in the crossfire of an armed robbery. They now say they are getting conflicting stories.

Police only have a vague description of a possible suspect.

“We’re going to find out who did this, it might not be today, it might not be tomorrow but we’ll definitely find out who did this,” said Ashantie Gwennabell, Coleman’s cousin.

Gwennabell says Coleman was expecting a baby boy in October and was going to name him Jakobe. Her baby shower was suppose to be on Saturday, according to Gwennabell, but now the family is trying to scrape together money for a funeral.

Coleman’s family is planning a vigil Sunday night at five o’clock outside the Matador North Apartments. There will be a balloon release so they are asking everyone bring blue balloons for baby Jakobe and pink balloons for Coleman.

There is also a gofundme page to help the family with funeral expenses.
