State workers accused of scamming money from unemployment system

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Some full-time state employees, who were never out of work, are accused of claiming and receiving unemployment payments, according to a state report obtained by the Lexington Herald-Leader through the Open Records Act.

The report says at least 19 employees improperly collected $54,232 in state and federal jobless benefits during April and May of last year.

A majority of the workers were employed by the Office of Unemployment Insurance or the Unemployment Insurance Commission where they processed pandemic-related jobless claims, according to the report.

The report does say say if any of the employees were disciplined.

On Thursday, the executive director of the Executive Branch Ethics Commission told the newspaper the agency had taken no public enforcement action against any of the employees identified in the state audit and could not comment on any possible pending actions.
