State reaches records for COVID positivity, deaths at 65, people in hospital

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky reached more records and grim numbers Wednesday as the COVID surge, fueled by the delta variant, continued across the state.
“Today I am sad to announce 65 deaths and 4,849 newly reported cases of COVID-19, the third highest report since the pandemic began. Of those cases, 1,518 are kids. Our positivity rate is the highest it’s ever been at 13.16% and hospitalizations have hit another record. Folks, all of this is avoidable. Please, let’s come together to do the right thing,” Gov. Andy Beshear pleaded in a social media statement.

In its daily report, the state said the new cases pushed the state’s total to 547,657 cases.

The 1,518 new cases among people 18 and younger surpasses the previous high of 1,335 set Tuesday.

The 65 deaths mean the state now has lost 7,640 people to COVID-related causes.

The new record positivity rate of 13.16% is up from 12.89% Tuesday and 12.87% Monday.

All the other key barometers also climbed to new highs.

The number of people in the hospital rose to 2,074 from 2,014 Tuesday and 1,893 Monday.

In one hint of improved news, 549 people are in ICU, down from 589 Tuesday but still ahead of the 529 reported Monday. Meanwhile, 338 people are on ventilators, the same as Tuesday but up from 301 Monday.
