Spring-like temperatures Thursday, as storm chances loom ahead

High pressure leaving, clouds taking its place

Overnight, clear skies allowed temperatures to quickly drop into the 30s for many across the Bluegrass. It’s a chilly Thursday morning, so a layer or two is needed. Additionally, dewpoints are in the low to mid-30s alongside temperatures. This means there’s plenty of moisture in the air to cause frost on cars, so you may need to get out to scrape before the sunrises.

Once the sun comes up, temperatures will quickly rise to the mid 40s. We’ll be mostly cloudy through the day, but temperatures will continue to rise. This is thanks to a breezy southern wind,  gusting up to 25-30 mph. This brings many of us up into the mid 60s.

Unsettled weather Friday through Sunday

Rain chances begin late Thursday night into Friday morning. Don’t forget the umbrellas when heading out the door on Friday! A round of rain sweeps through the Bluegrass throughout the morning and early afternoon. Rain will be on and off with some dry time in between showers.

Friday night, another round of rain moves in alongside a cold front moving south to north. This will bring heavy rain at first, fizzling out as it moves further north. Scattered showers linger through Saturday evening.

There may be a few thunderstorms mixed in with the rain showers. There is a small chance that a few of these storms bring gusty winds up to 55 mph. No major impacts are expected for the Bluegrass.

We will see 1-2″ of rain, with higher rainfall amounts concentrated farther south, where there is a higher chance for widespread rain and brief heavy downpours. Anywhere that sees a thunderstorm could also see locally higher rain totals.

Big cool down occurring Saturday

Following the Friday night cold front, a cold air mass lags. Through the day Saturday, we will see temperatures switching to be out of the northwest. This ushers in that cold air, and overnight we will drop into the low 20s. Sunday morning will be a frigid one.

Any leftover rain showers have the potential to transition to snow showers. We will likely see scattered flurries through the day Sunday, although we won’t see lasting impacts.

Cold temperatures last through Monday, with the start of the week staying in the 30s. As of now, we’re trending closer to average through the rest of the week, and we’re watching for unsettled weather mid-week.
