Sporting Art Auction at Keeneland Wednesday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The third annual Sporting Art Auction, presented by Keeneland Association and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington, is set for Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. ET in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion. This year’s auction features 175 high-quality lots representing fine sporting art, American paintings and sculpture from renowned masters as well as talented new artists. The Sporting Art Auction catalog is currently available online at thesportingartauction.com.

Registration and Bidding:

The public is encouraged to view the collection Monday – Tuesday, Nov. 16-17, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion. Doors will open on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Patrons may bid in person or by leaving an absentee bid, by phone through prior arrangement and online via www.liveauctioneers.com, www.invaluable.com and www.bidsquare.com.

Bidders who plan to attend the auction should arrive early to pick up their bid paddle.

Featured Artwork:

One of the auction’s most significant works is Sir Alfred James Munnings’ Mon Talisman, Chantilly, a 20” x 24¼” oil on canvas, signed and inscribed, depicting the winner of the Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly in 1928.

Also cataloged is The Heythrop Hunt, a 16½” x 23” signed watercolor by British artist Lionel Edwards. Before 1835, what is now known as Heythrop County in England was hunted by the Duke of Beaufort’s hounds.

Other notable pieces to be offered include LeRoy Neiman’s Racing, a signed 7¾” x 10” oil on board; The Athlete, a 30” x 30” oil on canvas by award-winning Vietnamese-American artist Quang Ho; and Loading the Barrels, Truman’s Brewery, a 30” x 40” signed oil on canvas by British artist Peter Biegel.

The auction also will feature works by such celebrated artists as Edward Troye, John Frederick Herring Sr. and Henry Stull, as well as contemporary pieces by Andre Pater, Charles Church, Larry Wheeler, Peter Howell and Richard Stone Reeves.
