Special Olympics Kentucky holds 2021 Summer Games at Eastern Kentucky University

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – After being canceled last year, the summer games were held once again at EKU campus.

600 athletes competed on the university track.

Organizers say it was a little less than half the number usually seen pre-pandemic.

For 19-year-old athlete Joseph Allen Ramirez, he says he’s just happy to race again

“Mainly for me, I’m not worried about the winning or anything like that. It’s worth the competing and having fun and being around people your age and just like meeting new people from different teams it’s just all and all enjoyable,” says Ramirez.

The USA games are on the calendar in 2022.

Special Olympics Kentucky says pretty soon they’ll be choosing some of their gold medalists from this year to go.
