Somerset wins its first state title on the final play, 34-31

LEXINGTON, KY (WTVQ)- The game looked as if it were over, but Somerset wouldn’t quit. Kaiya Sheron connected with Tate Madden on the final play of the Class 2A State Championship to beat Mayfield, 34-31. It’s the school’s first state title in football and just the second ever in any sport.

The Briar Jumpers led throughout most of the game, but late in the 4th, Mayfield would score two touchdowns in 10 seconds to take a three point lead.

Somerset would go three and out on the ensuing possession. Mayfield would eat clock from there, leaving the Briar Jumpers at their own 13 with 28 seconds remaining and zero timeouts remain

Sheron went to work, though. The junior started with a 7 yard scramble, followed it up with a 3rd down conversion to Kade Grundy out of bounds. Sheron would then hit Tate Madden down the left side and out of bounds at the Mayfield 37 yard line with two seconds remaining. Following a pass interference in the endzone. Sheron and Madden would connect again for the game-winner.

“Tate Madden hasn’t played offense that much this year, but he knew what he was going to get. I put him there before the play started. He knew he was going to catch this ball,” said Sheron.
