Snow showers and gusty winds return Sunday as colder air settles into Kentucky
After a mild and rainy Saturday, temperatures tumble with snow showers and possible snow squalls mainly across eastern Kentucky
Chilly Start Gives Way to Rain Showers Saturday Afternoon
Saturday began on a bright but cool note across central and eastern Kentucky. Sunshine helped temperatures rebound into the low 50s for many communities, with some southern counties even reaching the low 60s.
As the afternoon went on, clouds thickened and light rain showers moved in, bringing a damp end to what started as a pleasant day. Most of this rain is light and continues to exit the area through the evening hours.
Colder Air Returns Overnight With Refreezing Concerns
As showers move out tonight, skies will gradually clear and colder air will move back in behind the system. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the low to mid 20s.
With temperatures dropping below freezing, any leftover moisture on roads, sidewalks, and bridges could refreeze. That means a few slick spots are possible late tonight and early Sunday morning, especially on overpasses and untreated surfaces.
Snow Showers and Possible Snow Squalls Sunday
Sunday will feel much different than Saturday.
A strong push of colder air from the north will keep highs stuck in the low to mid 30s, and gusty winds could reach 25 to 35 mph at times. As this colder air moves in, moisture coming off Lake Michigan will help spark scattered snow showers, mainly across northeastern Kentucky and parts of the Bluegrass region.
Some of these could briefly turn into snow squalls, which are fast-moving bursts of heavy snow and strong wind. If one passes through your area, visibility could drop quickly and up to an inch of snow could fall in a short amount of time.
Most locations will see:
-
Flurries or light snow showers
-
Less than an inch of accumulation
-
Heavier snow staying mainly east and northeast
Snow activity may linger into early Monday before gradually tapering off.
Cold and Breezy Conditions Continue Into Monday
Monday stays on the chilly side with highs once again in the low to mid 30s. Northeastern areas may continue to see a few lingering snow showers, while southwestern parts of the viewing area should remain mostly dry with occasional breaks of sunshine.
Morning wind chills will feel especially cold, dipping into the teens in some spots.
Warming Trend Arrives Midweek With More Rain Ahead
Once this cold system moves out, temperatures will steadily climb, Tuesday and Wednesday warm back into the 50s. Sunshine increases and conditions stay dry for a bit.
By Thursday, another weather system is expected to move in, bringing the next chance for rain showers across Kentucky.
