Signs of normalcy as more people return to gyms
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – “People want to lose their quarantine weight, so they’re definitely going to come back,” said Justin Emery, General Manager of CSS Wellness in Lexington.
Workout gyms are getting back in shape themselves.
“I think it’s a mixture of people wanting it to be safe, and I think it’s a mixture of people just going crazy at home,” said Emery. “You’ve been around your kids for so long, around your husband for so long. Some people just want to get somewhere, even if it doesn’t necessarily have to do with fitness they just want to get out.”
Emery relates the recent increase in members to people being vaccinated and feeling safer in group settings, needing to get out of the house, and affordability.
“A lot of people had to make some tough decisions about what they were going to do with their bills last year,” he said. “So, now that we have a little more income streaming in, people getting jobs, people back to work, we’re getting those memberships back up, enrollments rolling in, and we’re doing promotions to make it easier.”
During the shutdown, Emery said sales dropped about 80%. He said it’s up 20-30% in just the last month.
It’s happening at the ‘Y’ as well, in part because people feel it’s safe to come back.
“In the beginning, it was really, really scary, but we’re moving past that, and we’re getting to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said Amy Deskins, ‘Y’ member. “So, we’re really happy about that.”
Deskins said she never stopped going to the gym but said it’s nice to see things getting back to some degree of normalcy.
“A lot more people are coming back,” she said. “I think people are getting vaccinated, and they’re feeling a little more comfortable. So, being around people is not so scary anymore.”
What’s scary for some now is trying to lose weight and get back in shape.
