Showers and storms exit giving way to a cooler weekend

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Happy Friday! We are tracking lingering overnight showers and a few storms early. Those showers and storms will exit as a cold front passes through the region. The best chance of rain will be before noon, before we begin to dry out into the afternoon. Far southern Kentucky may see shower and storm chances lingering into the afternoon, but in the greater Lexington area you can expect a mainly dry afternoon. Temperatures take a hit today as well after the summer-like feel we’ve been enjoying all week. Afternoon highs will struggle to reach the upper 60s for most areas.

Skies clear out tonight leading to chilly conditions across the region to start the day on Saturday. You can expect mostly sunny skies throughout the day but temperatures will only reach the upper 50s and low 60s. Sunday will be even cooler. After starting the day in the upper 30s, afternoon highs will only reach the mid-to-upper 50s.

Patchy frost is expected to start the day on Monday as temperatures will fall into the mid-to-upper 30s. This is isn’t an abnormally late frost chance though, the average last frost in Lexington is April 24th. A “frost” is technically defined by a temperature of 36 degrees or colder. A “Freeze” is when the temperature falls to 32 degrees or colder, with hard freeze occurring when temperatures falling under 28 degrees for an extended period of time. Monday afternoon temperatures will recover into the mid-60s for most areas.

Our next system will move through the region on Tuesday into Wednesday. We aren’t expecting this to be strong system but it will bring shower and storm chances Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Stay with the ABC 36 Storm Team for more updates.
