Sheriff: Man dies while being taken into custody in Franklin County

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man deputies say was resisting arrest died while being taken into custody in Franklin County.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says deputies received a tip about a wanted person at a home on Union Ridge Road Tuesday night.

Deputies responded to the scene and asked the man sitting on the front porch, who was identified as Roy Mitchell, if the person they were looking for was inside.

Deputies say Mitchell refused to cooperate, tried to prevent them from making an arrest and resisted when they placed him into custody.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says Mitchell started having trouble breathing and deputies administered two inhalers, which temporarily helped his breathing, but then his condition worsened.

The sheriff say the deputies did CPR on Mitchell but he died at the scene.

An autopsy on Mitchell will be performed on Wednesday.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says Georgetown police are now handling the death investigation and will present the case to a Franklin County grand jury.
