Shooting victims ranged from 18-40, six men, one woman

UPDATE, POSTED 12:40 P.M. MONDAY, AUG. 31, 2020

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Seven people — six men and a woman — were injured, ranging in age from 18 to 40, at a cookout Sunday night outside the Dunbar Community Center and police are asking the public to come forward with information.

In a release, police said around 9 p.m. Sunday, August 30, officers were dispatched to the area of Upper, Fifth, and Toner streets for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering a gunshot wound outside the Dunbar Community Center.

Additional victims were transported by private vehicles to local hospitals.

The seven victims have been identified as:

  • Male victim, 18
  • Male victim, 19
  • Female victim, 21
  • Male victim, 21
  • Male victim, 29
  • Male victim, 34
  • Male victim, 40

The preliminary investigation found that several people had gathered at the community center Sunday afternoon for a cookout when the shooting occurred near the basketball court. It appears multiple people fired shots.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Seven people were shot on a basketball court outside the Dunbar Community Center in Lexington on Sunday night, according to Lexington Police.

Investigators say they’re getting conflicting stories from witnesses.  Police say some witnesses claim it was a drive-by shooting after someone in a car went by and opened fire on people on the court.  Other witnesses are telling investigators someone walked up to the court and opened fire.

Police say it happened around 9:00 p.m. near North Upper Street.

Investigators say one of the victim’s was in critical condition.  No names were released.

Police say six of the seven shooting victims were taken by private vehicle to area hospitals.

Investigators say they’re trying to determine what led to the shootings and are looking for those responsible.
