Second person dies following crash in Letcher County

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A weekend crash in Letcher County has claimed a second victim.

Kentucky State Police say 90-year-old Kathleen Tackett, of Belcher, died Wednesday night at the Pikeville Medical Center from injuries she sustained in the May 5 crash on U.S. 119 near Jenkins.

Trooper say 37-year-old Franklin Travis Helbert was driving a pickup while pulling a horse trailer when he lost control, crossed the center line, and hit a Toyota Yaris.

Tackett was one of two passengers in the car. She, along with the driver, 66-year-old Judy Kiser, and other passenger, 61-year-old Barbara Newsome, were all taken to the hospital.

Newsome died later at the hospital.

Police have charged Helbert with manslaughter, assault, driving under the influence and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
