SCAM ALERT: Beware of false donation calls from FOF, LFD

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Fraternal Order of Firefighters and the Lexington Fire Department are warning residents of a phone scam in the area.

According to the fire department, over the last four days at least two people have received calls from someone claiming they are part of the Fraternal Order of Firefighters or the Lexington Fire Department asking for donations.  The fire department says that anyone who receives these calls should verify that the caller has appropriate identification.  They also urge residents to follow these tips in order to stay protected from false donation requests:

  1. Ask fund-raisers for identification.
  2.  Ask how your contribution will be used. Get written information.
  3. Call the organization to verify the fund-raiser’s authenticity.
  4. Be wary if a fund-raiser suggests you’ll receive special treatment for donating.
  5. Don’t feel intimidated about declining to give. A caller who uses intimidation tactics is likely to be a scam artist.

If you are contacted by someone asking for these funds please contact the Lexington Fire Department Investigation Division tip line at (859)231-5672, or the Lexington Police Department at (859) 258-3600.
