SCAM ALERT: AG warns of “virtual kidnapping” scam in KY
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Attorney General Andy Beshear is warning Kentuckians of a “virtual kidnapping” scam reported in the state.
The scam involves a frantic call from a stranger saying that a family member has been kidnapped and is in danger. The caller threatens to harm the alleged kidnap victim unless a ransom is paid.
According to reports, a Nicholasville man answered a call where he heard a child asking for help and was told his daughter had been kidnapped. The caller then demanded money in exchange for the victim’s daughter to be released unharmed. The victim asked the caller to confirm his daughter’s birthday. When the caller could not provide the information he eventually hung up and the alleged kidnap victim was found safe at her school.
Beshear said anyone who receives this type of call should contact their local police or sheriff’s office and follow these steps offered by the FBI:
- Try to slow down the caller by repeating and writing down their request and say you need time to respond.
- Ask to speak to the victim or ask the caller to describe the victim and answer a specific question about them.
- While on the phone with the alleged kidnapper, attempt to secretly call the supposed kidnap victim from another phone.
- Do not disagree or argue with the caller and try to remain calm.
Beshear warned that “virtual kidnapping” scammers may use personal information the family or victim share over the Internet or on social media to make the scam appear credible.
Beshear said anyone who receives this type of call should also report it to the Office of Attorney General Consumer Protection hotline at 888-432-9257.
