Run, walk or wheel to support Veterans on Saturday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The annual VA 5K will be held this Saturday, November 2, to raise money for the Lexington Fisher House and the Lexington VA Health Care System.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the fundraising campaign to build a Lexington Fisher House.  A Fisher House is a home where military and veterans’ families stay for free while their loved one is hospitalized at either Lexington VA Health Care System’s hospitals.

The home will be built just inside and to the left of the main entrance to the hospital on Leestown Road.  The groundbreaking is scheduled for this time next year.

The home will have 16 private suites and an open living room, dining room and kitchen, totaling 13,400 square feet.  It is a $7 million project.  The local fundraising group, ‘Friends of Lexington Fisher House’ is working to raise half the construction cost, which will be matched by the national Fisher House Foundation.

Saturday’s race course will take runners, walkers and wheelers through the park-like grounds of the Lexington VA Health Care System Sousley Campus at 2250 Leestown Road in Lexington.

The race begins at Noon.  The cost is $35 for adults, $20 for children under the age of 18 and $30 for teams of ten or more.

The proceeds will be split between the VA and the Friends of Lexington Fisher House, which is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit foundation.  Donations are tax deductible.

On-site registration on race day will be from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

There will be door prizes, military vehicles on-site and a Blackhawk Helicopter from the Kentucky National Guard will land on-site and be on display.
