Road crews prepping for all types of weather

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Road crews have been preparing for all types of conditions this weekend — whether it’s rain, snow, high winds, or even falling debris.

From noon to 7 p.m., we’re expected to have a high wind warning with winds at almost 60 miles an hour.

The strongest winds happen in the afternoon.

This past Tuesday, we saw some high winds that left thousands without power.

The winds on Friday will be faster than what we saw on Tuesday — so plan on even more scattered power outages.

If you have to hit the road, drivers should stay alert for any falling trees, branches even power lines on the roads.

Once the sun goes down and we hit those low temperatures, it’ll be the perfect recipe for slick spots — even the potential for black ice on the roads if we hit freezing temperatures.

But road crews tell me that they’re already out, treating the major roadways with salt trying to prevent any accidents from happening.

“We’re in really good shape. We’re maxed out on liquid additive and we’ve only used a couple hundred tons of salt, spot treating already this year. We have a contracted place to replace it. So we feel pretty comfortable that we have over 8,000 tons on hand,” said Rob Allen, the director for Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Streets and Roads.

Drivers need to buckle up because with just the right amount of force if you have to drive, the winds can make it pretty difficult.

The winds may not necessarily pick up and move your car, but they can cause you to easily lose control.
