Richmond Police Appreciation Day raises $11,000 for Ellis family

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ)- Organizers say Richmond Police Department Appreciation Day raised more than $11,000 for the family of a slain officer.

About 24 volunteers spent six hours Sunday taking collections from area businesses. Organizers say they collected a total of $11, 161.47 in cash. There were also in-kind donations worth $6,710. The in-kind contributions provided dinner certificates for the entire police department. Each certificate is for $45.70 . The amount honors the badge number (457) of Officer Daniel Ellis. Investigators say he was shot and killed last month during a robbery investigation. Volunteers also passed out 6,000 ‘RPD Appreciation Day’ stickers, which also include Ellis’ badge number.

Organizers say the appreciation day was a way for the community to thank the police department for the hard work it does throughout the community.
