Richmond PD: Don’t fall for home computer phone scam
Police say a man received a phone call from someone claiming to be a ‘Windows’ technician. The scammer told the victim his computer security had expired, and he needed his information so he could patch in remotely.
Investigators say that after the victim gave the man access, the caller then offered him firewall software plans to protect his computer at a cost of $199- $249. When he said no, the scammer reportedly became angry and told the victim he could not have his computer back. Police say the caller then began deleting the victim’s forms and documents folder. Investigators say the victim had to finally shut down his computer.
Police say the incident is the second report received with a variation of the scam. They say you should never give an unsolicited caller access to your computer. And when it doubt, contact police.
