Retired Fayette schools official dies after fall from ladder

BRISTOL, TN. (WTVQ) – The recently retired chief operating officer of Fayette County Public Schools has died following a fall from a ladder. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Mary Wright, who retired last September, slipped and fell from a ladder and hit her head on a concrete floor, lapsing into a coma.

The newspaper reports that the accident happened in June while Wright and her husband were helping Wright’s son open a family-style restaurant in Bristol, Tennessee. She was painting the restaurant interior when the accident happened, according to the paper.

Wright died last Friday, August 19, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mary Wright was 60-years old.

Fayette County Public Schools released a statement from Superintendent Manny Caulk.

“Words are inadequate to express all that Mary Wright meant to our school district. A consummate professional who approached any challenge with both grace and nerves of steel, Mary had a way of improving everything she touched. Every operational area in our school district is better for having had Mary’s influence, but more profoundly, we are all better for having known her,” Caulk said.

Services were held Sunday, August 21, in Tennessee.

Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 West High Street, Lexington, KY 40507, or a charity of your choice in Wright’s name.
