Red Cross urges donors to give as organization’s blood shortage continues
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – As the American Red Cross is still experiencing a severe blood shortage, donors of all blood types are desperately needed to help those in need of lifesaving transfusions.
Currently, the organization needs to collect over 1,000 additional blood donations day every day to keep up with demand as hospitals receive an abnormally high amount of traumas and emergency room visits, organ transplants and elective surgeries.
To show its appreciation, Red Cross will give all donors between July 7 and July 31 a $10 Amazon gift card through email and will automatically enter donors for a chance to win gas for a year, valued at $5,000. July donors also will get entered to win a trip for four to Cedar Point or Knott’s Berry Farm.
Donations at this time will help the Red Cross’ supply for the rest of the summer season.
Those who have gotten the COVID-19 vaccine can donate in most cases. The Red Cross does note that knowing the manufacturer of the vaccine a donor has received is helpful in deciding donation eligibility.
To schedule an appointment to give blood or platelets, donors can use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.
