Rainy start to an active workweek

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Monday! We are expecting an active workweek weather-wise with multiple rounds of rain and storms on the way. For Monday we are expecting rounds of sub-severe thunder showers and storms. Heavy downpours and isolated small hail will be possible, but overall the storms should stay below severe criteria. Storm chances decrease overnight with just isolated showers and thunderstorms expected.

Tuesday will start on the drier end up but storm chances will ramp up through the midday and afternoon hours. All of Kentucky has a Level 2 Severe Risk on Tuesday, with large hail and damaging wind as the two primary threats. There is also an isolated spin-up tornado threat as well. Scattered rain and storms could linger into the overnight hours and early morning hours of Wednesday.

Wednesday into Wednesday night poses are greatest severe weather potential of the week. A Level 3 Severe Risk has already been put in place for a large chunk of Kentucky and the rest of the Ohio Valley. All “modes” or types of severe thunderstorms are possible. There is still some uncertainty around the timing of the strongest of the storms. A round of afternoon and early evening storms are possible ahead of a line of strong-t0-severe storms moving in late Wednesday night into the early morning hours of Thursday. There is not only a severe threat of damaging wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes, but there is also a isolated-to-scattered flash flood threat as well. 2-4 inches of rain is expected between Monday and Thursday, with isolated heavier amounts possible within those storms. Make sure you are staying Weather Aware through this entire period, especially Wednesday evening and overnight. Severe storms could move in when you are asleep, so you need to make sure you have a way to receive weather alerts.

Thursday will be a day of transition as a cold front will sweep through the region. This will drop our temperatures heading into your Mother’s Day weekend. Afternoon highs will struggle to get out of the upper 60s, with daily isolated rain chances.
