Rain to snow in the forecast Friday

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

Happy Friday everyone! We are tracking rain turning to snow late this afternoon into the evening hours. A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at noon today for central Kentucky and will last until 1 a.m. Saturday. The Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 4 p.m. today and lasts until 4 a.m. Saturday for eastern Kentucky. Difficult travel is likely later this evening, especially for areas along and north of I-64.

Many areas will start off with a period of rain showers Friday afternoon, before transitioning from rain to snow through the evening hours. For areas along and north of I-64, this will take place during the late afternoon and early evening. For Central Kentucky south of I-64, this will take from early evenings hours, through around 8 p.m. – 10 p.m. For areas in far southern Kentucky, most of this system will be just rain for you, with a brief period of snow possible late Friday evening.

We have 1-3 inches of snow in the forecast for northern and northeastern Kentucky. Snow totals drop as you head further south into south-central and southeastern Kentucky with up to an inch possible for those areas. Isolated spots could surpass 1 inch within any heavier bands that form. This isn’t a lot of snow, but it is enough to disrupt the Friday evening commute with slushy, wet roads.

Most snow will exit the region after midnight, with just a few widely scattered mountain snow showers continuing through the early morning hours Saturday. Temperatures will be dropping quickly as the snow exits overnight. Areas with accumulation on the ground experience colder temperatures than areas without any snow. Wind chill values Saturday morning will be in the low teens in spots. This cold breeze sticks around throughout the day on Saturday. Afternoon highs will struggle to reach the low 30s.
