Rain & storms Tuesday ahead of a dry rest of the week

Heavier rain and storms will be possible Tuesday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – After a stretch of active weather, central and eastern Kentucky will see one final push of showers and storms on Tuesday before a much-anticipated dry and comfortable pattern settles in for the rest of the week.

Tuesday: Scattered Storms & Flash Flood Risk

A cold front approaching from the northwest will bring widespread cloud cover and several rounds of showers and storms through the day. While it won’t be a washout, expect off-and-on rain and storms from morning through the afternoon, especially across southern and southeastern Kentucky, where the greatest rainfall totals are expected.

The main concern today is the risk for localized flash flooding, especially in areas from Richmond south and eastward, where a Level 2 out of 5 (Slight Risk) for flash flooding is in place. Rainfall rates could be high with any slow-moving or training storms. While a few stronger storms with gusty winds are possible, the heaviest rain will be the bigger issue today.

Afternoon temperatures will be held in check due to cloud cover and rainfall, with most spots struggling to reach the mid-80s. It will still feel muggy, but that will change tonight.

The cold front will sweep through the area late this evening into the overnight hours. As it does, drier and slightly cooler air will begin filtering in from the northwest. Overnight lows will dip into the low to mid 60s — a refreshing change from the recent warm and sticky nights.

Midweek Outlook: Sunshine & Comfortable Air

Get ready for a stretch of beautiful early July weather. Wednesday and Thursday will feature mostly sunny skies, lower humidity, and seasonable temperatures. Highs will reach the mid-80s on Wednesday with dew points falling into the comfortable-to-noticeable range — a big improvement from the swampy conditions we’ve had lately.

Morning lows will also stay cool in the 60s, offering a nice break for early risers and those with outdoor chores or plans.

4th of July Weekend: Warming Up Again

Independence Day looks spectacular with sunshine, dry skies, and highs in the upper 80s to near 90. Humidity will start to tick back up by Friday, but it won’t reach uncomfortable levels just yet.

The weekend will trend hotter and more humid, with highs returning to the low 90s by Saturday and Sunday. We stay mainly dry through the day Sunday, with scattered showers and storms possibly returning late Sunday into early next week.
