Rain exits, cooler air settles in before a brief quieter stretch

Rain tapers off with clouds and a cool feel

After a wet and occasionally stormy night, showers gradually wind down from northwest to southeast as a cold front pushes through the region. A few lingering showers may hang on a bit longer across southern and southeastern Kentucky, but most areas trend drier as the morning progresses.

Clouds stick around for much of the day, and with a steady north wind in place, temperatures struggle to warm. Highs only reach the low to mid 60s, which is noticeably cooler than what is typical for early May.

There is a small chance for a few light showers to redevelop later in the day, mainly across southern Kentucky, but confidence in additional rain is fairly low. It’s more likely the area will be plagues by low lying clouds and misty conditions. By late evening, conditions turn dry across the entire region.

Chilly night with a chance for patchy fog

Early into the overnight a bit of rainfall will persist, especially south of I-64, though most begin drying out.

As skies begin to clear and winds relax, temperatures fall into the 40s overnight. With recent rainfall and light winds, a few areas could see patchy fog develop, especially in spots that clear out more quickly.

It will be a noticeably cooler night compared to earlier in the week.

Dry and cool weather settles in to end the week

High pressure takes control heading into Thursday and Friday, bringing a stretch of quiet weather. Skies remain mostly clear to partly cloudy, and temperatures stay below normal.

Afternoon highs on Thursday remain in the low to mid 60s, with a cool start Friday morning as some areas dip into the 40s. A few of the typically cooler locations could even briefly drop into the upper 30s, raising a low-end chance for patchy frost.

By Friday afternoon, temperatures begin to recover slightly, climbing into the upper 60s and low 70s.

Rain chances return this weekend with a warmer trend

Another system moves in late Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing scattered showers and possibly a rumble of thunder. Severe weather is not expected, but periods of rain are likely.

Conditions improve later Saturday, with skies beginning to clear and temperatures warming into the mid to upper 70s, closer to seasonal norms.

Another round of showers and storms may arrive on Sunday as a cold front moves through. While it is still too early to pin down exact timing and strength, there is at least some potential for a few stronger storms depending on how the system evolves. Keep this in mind when making mother’s day plans, Sunday may not be the best day to head outdoors.

A brief dry stretch early next week

Behind the weekend system, high pressure returns to start the new week, bringing drier conditions once again. Temperatures remain on the cooler side, generally in the upper 60s to low 70s, keeping the spring-like feel in place.

Overall, the pattern features a mix of cool, quiet days and occasional rounds of rain, typical for this time of year in Kentucky.
