Quintuplets Delivered at UK Healthcare on Mom’s Birthday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Lexington couple has welcomed five newborns – four girls and one boy – into the world.

The rare set of quintuplets arrived at the UK HealthCare Birthing Center on November 11th.

Savannah, Sadie, Sofia, Scarlett, and Lucas beat the stroke of midnight to share a birthday with their mother, Katie Schaftlein.

Katie and her husband Lucas appeared today at a press conference in the Wethington Building on UK HealthCare’s campus to introduce their new family.

Physicians say they knew early on that there would be five babies on the way, and consulted with high-risk obstetrics specialists to ensure their safe delivery.

Katie delivered the babies at 29 weeks and 5 days of gestation, over the 28 weeks physicians were hoping for.

Katie’s husband Lucas, who had left for a business trip to Japan, learned she was delivering just after touching down on the other side of the world.

“I left her that day and kissed her goodbye, and three, four hours later she was in the hospital,” Lucas said.

Dr. Wendy Hansen delivered the five babies within four minutes.

The quintuplets will remain in the hospital for several weeks before they are ready to go home.
