Quiet Friday ahead of more rain Saturday
Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast
Happy Friday everyone! We get a break from the rain to close out your workweek. Temperatures take a bit of hit, only reaching the mid-50s across the bluegrass region, with warmer temps possible in southeast Kentucky. Central Kentucky will likely be under a blanket of clouds for most of the day, with some peaks of sunshine possible in southeast Kentucky. Temps will fall in the low 40s overnight, ahead of more rain in the forecast on Saturday.
Saturday’s rain will come in multiple waves as an area of low pressure sweeps through the region. The first wave will bring rain mainly to southern and southeastern Kentucky in the midday. The next wave will be impacting all of the ABC 36 viewing area late Saturday afternoon into the evening hours. A widespread half inch to an inch worth of rain, with heavier amounts possible to the south and the east where there will be multiple waves of rain.
There is a low-end flood risk Saturday in southeastern Kentucky, mainly for low-lying and flood prone areas with poor drainage.
Lingering rain showers will continue in Sunday morning as temperatures drop into the 30s. With the drop in temperatures, a changeover to a rain/snow mix will be possible through the day into Sunday night. Don’t expect any accumulation but snow showers will be possible Sunday night into Monday morning for the ridgetops in eastern Kentucky.
A weak system moves through the region Tuesday into Wednesday. This will bring another chance of rain, and another potential rain/snow mix into Wednesday.
After that system, we will likely enter a bit of lull in the pattern to start February. The Climate Prediction Center is highlighting the Ohio Valley for drier and warmer than normal conditions. However, a quick look at the long range forecast that a return of more typical winter-like conditions will be possible in mid-to-late February.
