Progress reported on improvements to Ohio River bridge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Transportation officials are reporting progress on improvements to an Ohio River bridge connecting Kentucky and Indiana.

They say three southbound lanes on the Kennedy Bridge at Louisville will be open by the second week of October, according to media reports.

Kentucky Transportation Secretary Greg Thomas said Thursday that one southbound lane will reopen to traffic Friday, while two other lanes will open by Oct. 10.

When the project is complete, the Kennedy Bridge will carry six lanes of Interstate 65 South traffic, and the Lincoln Bridge will carry six lanes of I-65 North traffic. Work is expected to be done in December.

Thomas says tolling is expected to start in December when the Kennedy, Lincoln and a still-unnamed East End bridge connecting Kentucky and Indiana are fully operational.
