Prison escapee accused of using dead cousin’s identity for 37 years

LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man who police say spent three decades living under the name of his dead cousin, was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The newspaper reports 71-year-old Billy Burchfield was sentenced after pleading guilty to fraud and identity theft.

According to the newspaper, Burchfield was serving a 16-year sentence at a Georgia prison when he escaped in 1979 and ended up in Laurel County.

The newspaper reports Burchfield lived under the name of his dead cousin, Harold Arnold, for 37 years while he lived, worked and eventually applied for disability benefits.
