Principal: Student brought gun, marijuana to Bryan Station HS

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Bryan Station High School student is accused of bringing drugs and a gun to school on Friday.

In a letter to parents, Bryan Station High School Principal James McMillin says a tip led them to the student who had marijuana, a large amount of cash and an unloaded gun.

He says that student is now charged with trafficking marijuana and unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and is being referred to the juvenile court system.

McMillin says in the letter, the school, along with Fayette County Public Schools Department of Law Enforcement, conducted an investigation and are confident the student did not have any intent to use the weapon and did not have it because of any situation related to school.

The Principal tells ABC 36 this is the first incident of its kind he has seen at Bryan Station during his three year tenure there.

Regardless, he says he feels like he’s hearing about cases like these more often across the country.

He attributes it to community problems outside of school, but he says the school district has a major role in helping solve those problems.

McMillin and his staff say they’ve worked hard to build partnerships with other community stakeholders.

“I think the thing that Lexington has going for it is that with these partnerships that we have to do better. I mean the police have to do better, churches have to do better, the school system has to do better bridging the gap between home and school,” McMillin said.

“All these kids go to school here, and now they’re influenced because they know and it’s out here. It’s everywhere,” Candace Miller, a parent said.
