Prescription Pill Shot Glasses Upset Lawmakers

Some Kentucky lawmakers are upset with Urban Outfitters because they think the company’s line of flasks, shot glasses and beer koozies are contributing to prescription pill abuse.

Kentucky’s Attorney General Jack Conway said Wednesday he would join many other Attorney Generals from across the nation in asking Urban Outfitters to stop selling this line.

Conway said these Urban Outfitters’ products are designed to look like prescription pill bottles are different from other similar products on the market because they target young people.

Drug overdose deaths have skyrocketed in the past decade and tripled since 1990, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC said the overdose problem stems from prescription pain pills.

Congressman Hal Rogers wrote a letter to the President and CEO of Urban Outfitters. Some of the statements from his letter include:

• “I believe marketing products to young people with an explicit allusion to the misuse of prescription medicines is simply a bridge too far.”
• "I fear the sale of these incorrigible items could have the unfortunate consequence of leading more teens to seek out prescription meds, or even worse, an increase in Rx drug related overdoses."

We reached out to urban outfitters for a comment, but have not heard back from them. The clothing chain only has one store in Kentucky that’s in Louisville.
