Powerball hype reaches fever pitch during free ticket giveaway

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ)- Shoppers at the Brannon Crossing Kroger in Nicholasville say it only took 10 minutes for free Powerball tickets to get swallowed up during a Kentucky Lottery event, Wednesday.

A countdown from 10 set things off as shoppers, lined up for aisles, filed through to snatch their free ticket, a token of appreciation from Kentucky Lottery officials for playing Powerball. Event organizers even showed up with the check a winner from Kentucky would receive.

“We wanted to thank them because it’s rolled 20 times. It’s been awhile since we had a jackpot winner in Powerball,” says Chip Polston, VP of Communications for Kentucky Lottery.

While the money was a big draw, one woman got a little sentimental talking about the folks she met in line for the ticket. “We’re getting to know each other, we’re bonding and even if no one comes out a winner, we’re still winning because we’re building a friendly and community environment and relationship.”
