Positivity tops 12.5%; hospitalizations, ICU cases up 50% in eight days

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The state sees the COVID surge only getting worse before it gets better and that likely will mean continued rising numbers of cases, more difficulties with schools and most tragically, more deaths, state and health care leaders stressed again Wednesday.

Gov. Andy beshear reported 3,576 new cases a positivity rate of 12.59% and nine deaths.

“Today we are facing another tough report in our fight against the delta variant … Currently, there are more Kentuckians in the ICU battling COVID than ever before during this pandemic. Our hospitals are filling up and our cases among children are increasing. I need everyone to step up and get vaccinated and mask up indoors,” Beshear said in what has become a daily emotional social media plea.

Of the new cases, 989 are in people 18 or under. That’s up from 849 in the youngest age groups Tuesday. are in people 18 and under.
The state now has registered 525,746 cases since March 2020.
The positivity rate which has climbed at almost a vertical inclide is up from 12>47% Tuesday and 12.4% Monday.
Nine new deaths raised the total lost to virus-related causes to 7,468.

Just last week, the positivity rates were 11.83% Friday, 11.57% Thursday, 11.22% Wednesday and 11.05% Tuesday.

The hospitalizations and related numbers also continue a rapid climb, with 1,658 people in the hospital, up from 1,603 Tuesday, 1,528 Monday, 1,424 reported Friday, 1,371 people Thursday, 1,327 last Wednesday, and 1,251 last Tuesday.

In addition, 466 people are in ICU, up from 441 Tuesday, 429 people Monday, 391 Friday, 357 Thursday, 363 last Wednesday, 339 last Tuesday, and 331 last Monday.

Meanwhile, 229 people are on ventilator, down from 238 Tuesday, but up from 224 Monday, 185 Friday, 169 Thursday and Wednesday, and 168 last Tuesday.

Of the state’s hospital beds, 69.4% are occupied, of the ICU beds, 69.6% are occupied and of the available ventilators, only 34.3% are in use.
