Police: Woman found dead in Somerset church was murdered

SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ) – A murder investigation is underway after a 70-year-old woman was found dead inside a Somerset Church, according to authorities.

Somerset police say Ruthie Carolyn New was found dead minutes after a missing person report was filed on Thursday.

They say the report was filed after she missed church on Wednesday night.

New’s body was found by the pastor in the activity center, according to detectives.

Officials say this is an active investigation so they are not releasing her cause of death but they do say she was murdered.

The coroner says her husband had recently passed away.

No arrests have been made.
