Police: Shots fired outside Harlan Co. elementary leaves two injured

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Two people are recovering after shots were fired outside an elementary school in Harlan County, according to officials.

Investigators say it happened outside of Caswood Elementary School on Tuesday.

They say a man was struck in the eye by multiple rounds of gunfire and is in serious condition.

A 15-year old girl was shot in the hip by a pellet from a shotgun but did not need intimidate medical attention, according to police.

Officials say two small buildings owned by Cawood Elementary School had minor property damage as a result of stray gunshots striking the buildings.

Detectives say the actual Cawood Elementary School building was not struck by gunshots during the incident.

No students were in the building at the time of the shooting, however they say custodian/maintenance personnel were working inside the school.

Police say no arrest have been made at this time but they are working to identify those involved in the shooting which could lead to multiple arrests.

Officials say this was an isolated incident and the school was not the target.
