Police: Mass shooting prevented in Washington County
SPRINGFIELD, Ky. (WTVQ) – Police may have prevented a mass shooting at a business in Washington County.
Police say they arrested Matthew Smith with an AR-15, two rifles, five pistols, and ammunition. Springfield Police also say Smith had a detailed plan to carry out a mass shooting at L&B Manufacturing.
“He meant business,” said Chief John Smith.
Police found Smith after being called to the building for a suspicious vehicle and trespassing complaint. The Police Department says Smith pointed a gun at an officer. Officers took the gun out of his hands and arrested Smith.
“He knew which doors were barricaded, which doors were open, which doors were not. He knew that the parking lot was one-way in, one-way out. He even counted the roof air vents, so he knew the access and entry points, egress points,” said Chief Smith.
According to WHAS in Louisville, while in custody, Smith said he went to the business because of a woman being “trafficked.”
Smith is charged with Attempted Murder on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Trespassing, and Wanton Endangerment.
