Police: Impaired driver hit and killed utility worker

FLORENCE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Florence Police say an impaired driver hit a cable TV contractor, pinning him against his utility truck.

Investigators say the worker later died at the hospital and the driver was charged with manslaughter, DUI and other offenses.

Police say 30-year old Joel Rebennack of Florence was working as part of a cable TV utility crew and was standing behind his truck at the corner of US 25 and Glenn Rose Avenue in Florence on Friday.

Investigators say a 1997 Honda, driven by 53-year old Brenda Amerson of Florence, was north bound on Dixie Highway when she failed to yield to the stopped utility truck.

Police say the car hit Rebennack, pinning him against his vehicle.  He was airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say prior to his death, Amerson was charged with DUI 1st Aggravated and lodged in the Boone County Detention Center.

Police say Amerson bonded out of jail.  Investigators say after Rebennack died from his injuries, she was arrested again, this time in Dry Ridge.

Police say additional charges filed against Amerson include Manslaughter 2nd, Wanton Endangerment 1st and Criminal Mischief 1st.  She was returned to the Boone County Detention Center.

The case remains under investigation.
