Police: 2-month-old died after being left in hot car

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) Lexington police have released more details in the death of an infant.

Police say 2-month-old Valen Hakizimana died after a family member unintentionally left him in a car for several hours Thursday.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office ruled Hakizimana’s cause of death as hyperthermia.

He was pronounced dead at 8:13 p.m. at a home on Barksdale Drive in the Winburn neighborhood.

Sergeant Donnell Gordon said cases like these are heartbreaking.

“It’s one of those calls that sometimes can be a career-ender for us because it’s such a dramatic situation,” he said. “The last thing you want to do is come upon an infant that is deceased.”

He said people have to remember even though summer is ending it is still hot out, especially inside a car.

“Try and put something in that vehicle that’s a reminder that you know that you have to take out, like a purse, or even a phone, and set it next to the child,” Sergeant Gordon said.

Police say no criminal charges have filed at this time.
