Pikeville Kmart to close, along with 63 others across nation
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Retail chain Kmart is poised to close another 64 stores nationwide, according to USA Today and other sources.
Liquidation sales will reportedly begin on Sept. 22, while the stores will officially close their doors in mid-December. A handful of Sears stores will also be closing.
Sears Holdings – Kmart’s parent company — announced back in April that it would close dozens of stores by this summer, as the company has had a difficult time remaining profitable.
The latest closures include 17 stores that were among 235 sold last year by Sears Holdings to Seritage, USA Today notes.
News of the closures come at a time in which e-commerce sites like Amazon are increasingly dominating the industry – a problem plaguing a slew of similar chains, such as Macy’s which said last month that it would close 100 of its 675 locations.
